What are the Advantages of a Dedicated IP Address?

If you want to sell online through an online shop & you wish to take credit card payments you will need an SSL Certificate (SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer & is the padlock that shows that page is secure). If you set up an SSL certifcate then you would need a Dedicated IP address. Other uses for an SSL are things like secure login areas. You would want to ensure that when people login to the login area then they are doing this over a secure SSL link. Also for more advanced users you may want to allow users to download files from your website via an Anonymous FTP (File Transfer Protocol) feature. This would also require a Dedicated IP address. If you are heavily involved in Search Engine Marketing/Optimisation (SEM/SEO) & you promote multiple sites then you may wish to spread your websites over different IP addresses so that the search engines like Google do not associate all of your sites together. It is not necessarily the case that you will get a better search engine ranking just because you have a dedicated IP address but it may be to your benefit if you are promoting several websites.
